RTVE.es / THE THEME NIGHT 11.05.2011

In the last fifty years our environment has been invaded by new toxic molecules that could affect our health. In fact, many chemicals with hormonal effects may be detected in human blood. Among the first suspects are phthalates, used to make plastics more flexible or packaging of perfumes. Found in cosmetics, furniture, food packaging, PVC, toys, t-shirts ... All indications are that toxic substances are related to some health problems becoming more common.

Theme Night Saturday analyzes the relationship between toxic present in the environment and our health through two documentaries: "Homo toxicus" and "Men in danger."

Homo toxicus "

began the broadcast with a Canadian production directed by Carole Poliquin which speaks of the relationship between toxic substances and health problems such as cancer, allergies and hyperactivity. Their findings are disturbing and a challenge to change our way of life.

Every day tons of chemicals are released into the environment, not knowing that the long term are toxic to living things. Most of the 100,000 molecules developed since the Second World War and that are present in the products we use every day, never been tested.

Some of them found their way into our bodies and even in fetuses. Up to 247 toxic chemicals found in newborns . Today we are bequeathing our toxic burden our children with our DNA. It

impossible to escape from this insidious pollution. There Bisphenol A in the bottle of the bike, in bottles and in resins that line food cans. PBDS escape the computer and electrical appliances. We breathe every day, along with phthalates emanating from vinyl, lightweight plastics that are manufactured toys, which are toxic to reproduction. The PFOA of anti-stain treatments and anti-adhesive pans is associated with thyroid effects and cancer.

"Men in Danger

concludes Night Theme emission French co-production directed by Thierry De Lestrade and Sylvie Gilman that explains the relationship between chemicals and human reproductive problems. The

sperm production in humans has suffered a dramatic decline: 50% in the last 50 years. It has also been a dramatic increase in the number of cases of testicular cancer and infertility and in the number of birth defects in male reproductive organs Could anything be seriously detrimental to the male reproductive system? To Niels Skakkebaek, professor Danish researcher, "the male reproductive problems and infertility can be as dangerous as climate change."

Wildlife also appears to be under threat . Zoologists from around the world have seen strange results in the investigations that were carried out as a feminization of the population of fish or frogs, lizards or sexual malformations in birds or strange animal behavior. Scientists are beginning to wonder if all these worrying observations have a common origin.

has discovered an abnormal concentration of hormones in affected animals , as if the system endocrine had accelerated. Everything points to chemicals such as PCBs, DDT, glycol ethers, phthalates, pesticides, etc. They are known as endocrine disruptors and are capable of altering the hormonal system and cause different damage to health.

We are exposed to endocrine disruptors at work , but also in our homes by food contamination with pesticides, exposure to plastic products, the use of some detergents and environmental pollution.

These chemicals can be particularly dangerous during pregnancy : If you arrive to the system male reproductive, could affect the immune system, cause cancer, thyroid problems or diabetes. It could be a link between atypical developments taking place at birth and those that occur at maturity.
